Shahbaz: Geometry, Repetition, and the Language of Love

Working within the realm of contemporary abstract art, Shahbaz has developed a visual language rooted in what he considers the most fundamental elements of existence: color fields, geometry, repetition, and love. His practice unfolds as a quiet yet powerful meditation, where emotion and structure coexist in deliberate harmony. Each composition invites viewers into a contemplative space—one that feels deeply personal while remaining universally accessible.

Shahbaz’s artistic journey began early in life, when a teacher introduced him to the basics of drawing and painting during childhood. That formative experience planted a seed that would quietly shape his future. Although he initially followed a more conventional professional path, his connection to art never diminished. Over time, the pull toward creative expression became impossible to ignore.
Driven by his passion to follow his true calling, he enrolled at the prestigious Sir J.J. School of Art in Mumbai. Completing the course allowed him to refine his technique and develop a distinctive artistic voice.

Guided by a desire to  artistic voice rooted in intuition, discipline, and emotional honesty.
His paintings are marked by a dynamic dialogue between instinct and intention. Gestural movements, layered textures, and carefully balanced compositions reveal an artist deeply attuned to both spontaneity and control. Bold hues intersect with subtle gradients, while evolving patterns create surfaces that feel alive with energy. Each work becomes a visual extension of Shahbaz’s inner landscape—reflecting emotional states, lived experiences, and moments of introspection.

At the core of his practice are three elemental geometric forms: the triangle, the square, and the circle. These shapes recur across his compositions, functioning as both visual anchors and symbolic structures. Shahbaz views them as the earliest tools through which humans learn to understand the world. In childhood, we instinctively organize reality using basic geometry, and by returning to these forms, he taps into a shared memory of origin and recognition. In his hands, these simple shapes transcend their basic functions, evolving into timeless symbols of existence, balance, and continuity.

Repetition plays a central role in Shahbaz’s work. His patterns often resist a clear beginning or end, creating a sense of endless flow. This deliberate absence of hierarchy encourages viewers to move through the artwork without searching for a focal point. Instead, they are invited to surrender to rhythm, movement, and persistence. The effect is immersive and meditative, echoing the cyclical nature of life itself—constantly unfolding, unconstrained by rigid boundaries, and perpetually in motion.

A particularly evocative aspect of Shahbaz’s practice is his use of hypotrochoids and epitrochoids—complex geometric forms that he first encountered during childhood. Revisiting these shapes today carries both nostalgic and spiritual significance. Their construction requires patience, as each line is revealed gradually through repetition and motion. For Shahbaz, this process mirrors life’s rhythms, where clarity and understanding emerge slowly over time. Engaging with these forms becomes an act of contemplation, offering moments of stillness, reflection, and inner alignment for both the artist and the viewer.

Subtle heart shapes appear throughout Shahbaz’s compositions, reinforcing a central philosophy that underpins his work: love is everywhere. Rather than presenting love as a singular or romantic concept, he treats it as an omnipresent force—embedded in structure, rhythm, and connection. His work suggests that love is not external or distant; we are not merely surrounded by it, but fundamentally made of it. Through repeated motifs and flowing structures, his paintings evoke harmony, humanity, and a sense of eternity.

Color fields in Shahbaz’s work are deeply personal and intuitive, shaped by emotional states present at the moment of creation. His palette draws inspiration from nature, the cosmos, and the textures of everyday life—walls, surfaces, light, and shadow. These references ground his abstraction in sensory reality, allowing viewers to connect with the work on both emotional and experiential levels.

A significant milestone in Shahbaz’s artistic journey came in 2025, when he collaborated with Starbucks for a special exhibition in Mumbai. His paintings were showcased in a one-of-a-kind display that brought his work to a broader and more diverse audience. The collaboration marked an important step in his growing presence within the contemporary art landscape, bridging the worlds of fine art, public space, and everyday experience.

For Shahbaz, art is far more than a profession. It is a lifelong exploration of self, energy, and the invisible forces that connect humanity. As his practice continues to evolve, he remains deeply committed to exploring the intersections of emotion, geometry, and contemporary abstraction. His work offers more than visual engagement—it creates spaces for reflection, presence, and quiet connection, resonating long after the viewer steps away from the canvas.
