Whitefly Infestation Affects Coconut Trees Across 1.48 Lakh Hectares in Karnataka

The whitefly disease has severely impacted coconut plantations across 1.48 lakh hectares in 14 districts of Karnataka, raising concerns among farmers and agricultural experts. The infestation, which has been spreading rapidly, threatens both coconut yield and the livelihood of farmers dependent on coconut cultivation.

Extent of Damage

According to the Karnataka Agriculture Department, the worst-affected districts include Tumakuru, Chitradurga, Hassan, Mandya, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, and Shivamogga. Whitefly infestation weakens coconut trees by sucking sap from leaves, leading to yellowing, drying, and reduced nut production. If not controlled, it can cause significant long-term damage to coconut plantations.

Government Response and Measures Taken

To combat the spread of whiteflies, the Karnataka government has initiated several measures:

  1. Biological Control Methods: Agricultural experts are promoting the use of predatory insects and neem-based bio-pesticides to curb the infestation.

  2. Spraying of Pesticides: Farmers have been advised to use recommended insecticides and organic solutions to minimize damage.

  3. Research and Farmer Awareness: Scientists from agricultural universities are conducting research on effective pest control techniques and educating farmers on preventive measures.

  4. Financial Assistance: The state government is considering compensation for affected farmers under various agricultural relief schemes.

Expert Advice to Farmers

Agriculture experts recommend farmers:

  • Regularly monitor coconut plantations for early signs of whitefly infestation.

  • Adopt organic pest control methods like neem oil and fungal bio-agents.

  • Maintain proper irrigation and nutrition for trees to boost their resistance to pests.

With ongoing efforts, the Karnataka government aims to contain the whitefly outbreak and protect the state's coconut farming industry from further losses.
